The first consumer answering machine. The messages are stored on the reel to reel & the outgoing message is stored on the endless loop tape at the bottom. I actually hooked this up to our phone line & it works pretty good, The reel to reel doesn’t use a pinch roller so the quality is not the best but acceptable for voice messages, But if you notice the outgoing has to use a pinch roller. I didn’t leave this on our phone because messages are limited to 30 seconds & the caller doesn’t know when the machine has stopped recording. I had to remove the battery compartment, It was covered badly in corrosion with the old batteries still in the unit, Luckily it’s an off the shelf D cell battery compartment like you can buy at Radio Shack, I was running it from an ac adaptor. A cater-waiter is captured by a sound-activated spy cam when he returns home for the first time after spending a weekend working on Christmas parties to find an answering machine full of messages for people who don’t even live at that extension. —————————————————— Before 9/11, way back in the 20th century, people had longer attention spans. They also had answering machines; unportable electronic devices containing spooled magnetic tape which could be used to record voices over the telephone wires that connected homes to each other. Tracking backwards or forwards through messages was a risky endeavor, so very often people would just wait and endure exposure to unnecessary information. This is a representation of that experience, although slightly edited to reduce rewinding time. During the last few minutes of the video we wait for the tape to rewind again before being able to update the clock. In Pre-9/11 America all clocks weren’t synced together like they are today. Clocks could also lose time. Setting the time was a tedious procedure and easy to screw-up, as I’m sure you will agree. The spycam itself was the size of a VCR, which was a device we used back then to replay analog images from magnetic tape. One VCR is roughly one and a half times the size of a DVD player, which was a device we used to read digital data from optical discs.
